Chanda Plan Foundation Developing Training Program for Primary Care Physicians

DENVER — Although more than 10,000 people in Colorado are living with long-term physical disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, most physicians have little or no experience working with this population and may be unfamiliar with their unique medical needs. This knowledge gap can negatively impact the health and wellbeing of people with long-term physical disabilities.

The Chanda Plan Foundation is aiming to close the physician knowledge gap through a new continuing education curriculum for primary care physicians in Colorado. Developed in collaboration with Dr. Jeff Berliner, a rehabilitation physician at Craig Hospital, the curriculum will cover topics such as proper transfers to and from wheelchair, types of internal and external medical devices, preventing pressure sores, bladder and bowel education, and disability etiquette.
